Ocean Guardian wins Gold at the 2018 Edison Awards

12 April 2018

Ocean Guardian are thrilled to announce that today the FREEDOM+ Surf has taken out gold in the Athletics, Sports & Recreation – Injury Prevention category at the 31st Annual Edison Awards in New York. Powered by Shark Shield technology, the world’s only scientifically proven electrical shark deterrent technology, the FREEDOM+ Surf was awarded as one of the top innovations of 2018.

Lindsay Lyon, Ocean Guardian CEO says, “It’s an honour that the FREEDOM+ Surf innovation has been recognised at such a high international level by an independent panel of expert judges. This award for innovation will assist in educating surfers around the world that our personal shark deterrent device has been designed for surfers. The design collaboration with two-time World Surfing Champion Tom Carroll, iconic surf hardware brand Ocean & Earth and leading industrial design company Tiller Design ensured our innovation would not affect surfing performance.”

Ocean Guardian’s FREEDOM+ Surf is powered by Shark Shield Technology and features a removable power module housed in a custom designed Ocean & Earth tail pad kicker, it can be installed by a novice and easily transferred from board to board. It is suitable for all board types; all surfers need to do is install the Ocean & Earth tail pad/decal antenna on each board in their quiver. Light weight, the solution offers near zero drag so there is little to no impact on surfing performance.

Established in 1987 and often described as “the Oscars of Innovation,” the Edison Awards recognises and honours the world’s best innovations and innovators. All nominations were reviewed by the Edison Awards Steering Committee and the final ballot sent to an independent judging panel. The judging panel was comprised of more than 3,000 professionals from the fields of product development, design, engineering, science, marketing and education, including professional organisations representing a wide variety of industries and disciplines.
